Water

The energy sector, like others, is becoming increasingly concerned about water use as water becomes scarcer globally. New and advanced technologies are helping us to reduce the amount of water we need for our operations.

Rippled Water

Shell recognises that the energy industry is becoming one of the larger industrial consumers of fresh water. Some exploration and production activities use a lot of water - the shale gas production process is one.

Effectively managing and reducing our overall use of fresh water is a priority for Shell. Through new and advanced recycling and reuse technologies, we are working to significantly reduce the fresh water we use in our operations.

These innovative technologies will help make sure that our operations do not compete with the need for drinking water of communities in the Karoo.

Water

There are alternative sources of water that we’ll turn to in support of any exploration and development operations in the Karoo.

HOME

If enough natural gas is found, it could provide South Africa with a stable, cleaner-burning energy supply for decades.

The Karoo Basin

Shell has applied for rights to explore for natural gas in the Karoo. We want to meet communities and develop this to everyone’s benefit

The Journey

South Africa must continue to work toward overcoming energy challenges it faces today in order to meet the demands of tomorrow.

Commitment

We are committed to being a good neighbour. We are working to communicate directly with the people of South Africa about this process.

Natural Gas

Natural gas is the cleanest-burning fossil fuel and it is also affordable, abundant and environmentally acceptable.

Safety, Environment and Communities

Safety is our top priority. we aim for zero incidents that risk harming people. We also work to share benefits with local communities
