The Journey

Shell has been providing fuel to South Africans for generations. In the early days we traded in paraffin and kerosene and in the decades since we have helped heat and light your homes, and fuel your cars and trucks. Today our operations and petroleum products contribute to the economic growth of South Africa, supporting increasing transport, industrialisation and the development of its infrastructure.

The growth that has taken root here has provided a wealth of opportunities for South Africa. But we know this future cannot be built on the nation's current energy infrastructure. South Africa must continue to work toward overcoming energy challenges it faces today in order to meet the demands of tomorrow.

Natural gas can go a long way toward helping South Africa meet its current and future energy demands. Shell has identified a potentially plentiful supply of natural gas in parts of the shale rock formations deep beneath the surface of the South Western Karoo Basin, and we are currently working with the South African government to explore areas where we believe natural gas deposits could be economically and responsibly recovered.

The Karoo’s natural gas potentials could provide South Africa with a stable, alternative energy source for power generation that is 40% more energy-efficient and emits 50-70% less CO2 than coal.

We are working diligently to communicate directly with the people of South Africa about this process. In particular, we are listening and responding to community concerns throughout the Karoo region. We take all of these concerns seriously, and will continue to provide answers.

Shell and South Africa have come a long way. Now let’s build an energy future together that’s strong enough to take us – the people of South Africa – where we are capable of going.

HOME

If enough natural gas is found, it could provide South Africa with a stable, cleaner-burning energy supply for decades.

The Karoo Basin

Shell has applied for rights to explore for natural gas in the Karoo. We want to meet communities and develop this to everyone’s benefit

The Journey

South Africa must continue to work toward overcoming energy challenges it faces today in order to meet the demands of tomorrow.

Commitment

We are committed to being a good neighbour. We are working to communicate directly with the people of South Africa about this process.

Natural Gas

Natural gas is the cleanest-burning fossil fuel and it is also affordable, abundant and environmentally acceptable.

Water

New and advanced technologies are helping us to reduce the amount of water we need for our exploration operations.

Safety, Environment and Communities

Safety is our top priority. we aim for zero incidents that risk harming people. We also work to share benefits with local communities
