Working with local communities in the Karoo

Wherever we operate we are part of a community. Our many projects and facilities bring jobs and other benefits, but we know that they can also raise concerns. We work with communities to help strengthen local economies and improve how we operate. We will take the same responsible approach to our operations in the Karoo.

Family living in the Karoo

The Karoo is a special environment that is home to many communities. It must be respected. We aim to be open and honest, and to move forward with our potential natural gas project in a way that takes into account all environmental and social concerns.

To do this we will work with local communities, non-governmental organisations, environmental experts and regulatory authorities. We will:

  • Establish an independent advisory committee to provide expert advice aimed at limiting the potential impacts of our operations, taking into account all community concerns. This committee will also evaluate and identify opportunities whereby Shell can contribute to the economic and social growth over and above its commitments to local suppliers, contractors and other job creators.

  • Set up citizen advisory groups, made up of a broad cross-section of community leaders, elected officials, and others. Working alongside Shell’s team, these groups will identify and address concerns related to project operations, such as truck movements, road maintenance, noise and water management.

  • Work to promote equitable revenue sharing among communities.

Shell recognises increasing global concern over water supplies. We also understand the intense pressure on water resources in the Karoo. We will not compete with the people of the Karoo for their water needs.  No community, including the region’s agriculture industry, will go short of fresh water as a result of our operations.

Supporting Communities

We know that the Karoo’s most precious resources – its people and its communities – must come first.

In this section

HOME

If enough natural gas is found, it could provide South Africa with a stable, cleaner-burning energy supply for decades.

The Karoo Basin

Shell has applied for rights to explore for natural gas in the Karoo. We want to meet communities and develop this to everyone’s benefit

The Journey

South Africa must continue to work toward overcoming energy challenges it faces today in order to meet the demands of tomorrow.

Commitment

We are committed to being a good neighbour. We are working to communicate directly with the people of South Africa about this process.

Natural Gas

Natural gas is the cleanest-burning fossil fuel and it is also affordable, abundant and environmentally acceptable.

Water

New and advanced technologies are helping us to reduce the amount of water we need for our exploration operations.

Safety, Environment and Communities

Safety is our top priority. we aim for zero incidents that risk harming people. We also work to share benefits with local communities
