Meet the Shell Energy North America management team.

Mark Quartermain

Mark Quartermain

President, Shell Energy North America (US), L.P.

Mark Quartermain is president of Shell Energy North America (US), L.P. with responsibility for the company’s overall operations in natural gas and power trading, marketing and energy asset management, including Shell’s power generation portfolio, gas storage capabilities and emissions trading activities. 

Quartermain, who joined Shell in 1983, has extensive experience within the Shell Trading network, having worked in key positions within the crude, refined products and risk management groups.  He also helped establish Shell’s European natural gas trading activities.

Quartermain’s experience includes managing the company’s North Sea crude oil trading team and leading the global business development team for crude and products trading, with responsibility for overseeing trading activities in Houston, London, Singapore, Shanghai, and Moscow.  He also worked to identify and manage long-term projects for the crude and products trading group, and maintained the business unit’s relationships with a number of national oil companies.

In 1983, Quartermain earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering at Exeter University in the UK.  After completing roles in refining and marketing, he earned an MBA at the UK’s Open University in 1994.  He was named to his current position in April 2008.

Beth Bowman

Beth Bowman

Senior Vice President, West Region

Beth Bowman is Senior Vice President of the West Region with responsibility for managing gas and power trading and marketing activities in the Western United States and Mexico. 

Prior to joining Shell, Beth held positions in engineering, fuels and power contracting, financial services, regulatory affairs, strategic planning, budgeting, and power and gas trading. She joined Shell in 1999.

In her position, she oversees the company’s gas and power trading activities for the region in offices in San Diego, Portland and Spokane.

Beth earned her Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering at the University of Illinois, a master’s degree in engineering at San Diego State University and an MBA at the University of San Diego.

Ken Snodgrass

Ken Snodgrass

Senior Vice President, North Region

Ken Snodgrass is Senior Vice President of the North Region with responsibility for managing gas and power trading and marketing in the Northeast and Midwest U.S. and Canada.
 
In this position, he oversees the company’s gas and power business for the region in offices in Houston, Texas; Syracuse, N.Y.; Cambridge, Ontario; Calgary, Alberta; and Vancouver, British Columbia.
 
Ken recently returned to Houston after living in The Hague, The Netherlands, managing Shell’s liquefied natural gas supply in the Atlantic Basin.  He has also been involved in LNG projects in Nigeria, Qatar, Spain, Portugal, Mexico, and the U.S.
 
Ken has 17 years of global supply commercial experience, having worked in a number of global supply and trading assignments in crude and oil products, both in the U.S. and London.
 
Prior to joining Shell, Ken worked for another major oil company as a reservoir engineer in California and Texas, and for an independent exploration and production company.
 
Ken earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering at The Colorado School of Mines and an MBA at the University of Houston.

Glenn Wright

Glenn Wright

Senior Vice President, South Region

Glenn Wright is Senior Vice President of the South Region with responsibility for managing gas and power trading, including emissions trading, and marketing in 14 states from Texas and Kansas to Florida and North Carolina.

Glenn has been with Shell for 10 years and has more than 15 years of experience in industrial markets ranging from petrochemicals to power and gas. Most recently he was the General Manager of Business Development for Shell’s US lubricants business. His responsibilities included advancing the strategic growth platform, market intelligence, business development and portfolio management. 

Glenn’s background includes mergers and acquisitions, commodity trading, risk management and market development. He has held progressive management positions with other energy and risk management firms.

Glenn earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from The Georgia Institute of Technology, a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from The University of Texas at Austin and an MBA from The University of Texas at Austin.

Robert van der Zalm

Robert van der Zalm

Senior Vice President, Finance

Robert van der Zalm is Senior Vice President of Finance with responsibility for all financial activities.  In his role, he oversees the company's valuation, market risk and credit risk reporting, including tracking and measuring daily position/exposure, portfolio mark-to-market accounting and value-at-risk (VaR).  He is also responsible for managing Shell Energy North America's financing, balance sheet, and credit rating.

Robert, who joined Shell Energy in North America in 2008, previously served Shell’s downstream mergers and acquisition team as Portfolio Vice President.  Prior to joining Shell in 2004, Robert held a number of front line finance roles for Unilever in Taiwan, Thailand, Russia, South Africa and Singapore. 

Robert earned a First Class Honors degree in chemistry from Oxford in 1987 and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.

Bill McGrath

Bill McGrath

Senior Vice President, Marketing, Strategy, and Analysis

William (Bill) McGrath is Senior Vice President of Marketing, Strategy, and Analysis. He is primarily responsible for driving enterprise-wide strategic and tactical activities, with a particular emphasis on enhancing competitive position within the disciplines of Marketing Strategy, Trading Analytics, and Deal Structuring.

Bill’s career with Shell spans 18 years, encompassing assignments in Refining, Downstream Strategy, Oil Products Marketing and now Energy. He joined Shell as a chemical engineer at his hometown refinery in Geelong, Australia, where he contributed first, as a field technologist and, thereafter, as refinery economist. In 1995, he switched refineries, expatriating to Shell’s Fredericia Refinery in Denmark, where he focused on new unit start ups.

In 1997, Bill moved to the London office and participated in the strategy and development of several global initiatives including retail strategy and the globalization of Shell’s LPG business. Following this assignment, Bill was appointed Fuels Director for Shell Marine Products, with accountability for the Marine Fuels global bottom line. In 2002, driving the integration of Marine Fuel activities Shell had acquired from Texaco, brought him to the U.S. He joined Shell Energy North America in his current position in October 2003.

Bill earned an S.B. in chemical engineering, with a Minor in history, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1989.
