Our History

Shell Energy North America and its subsidiaries continue Shell’s 100-year legacy of energy expertise.

Shell Energy North America was formed in 1995 under the name Coral Energy Holding, L.P. Since then, we have grown to become one of the largest marketers of natural gas and power on the continent.

Coral Energy began as a joint venture between Shell and Tejas Gas Corporation. Initially, the company focused on marketing the natural gas assets of the two firms from its office in Houston. Shell then acquired Tejas in 1997, and eventually acquired the natural gas marketing assets and trading expertise of Shell Canada and put them in a wholly-owned Canadian subsidiary, adding to our physical presence across North America.

We added power generation assets to our portfolio in 2000, when Shell transferred its Intergen business into Coral Energy. The company’s portfolio of products and services continued to expand, and our emerging expertise brought recognition in 2005 as Energy Risk magazine’s natural gas “House of the Year.”

Today, Shell Energy North America sells more than 12 Bcf of natural gas daily, more than 200 million megawatt hours (MWh) of power each year, and controls 5,000 MW in power generating capacity across North America.
