The Houston Open Surpasses $50 million in Cumulative Charitable Contributions

Shell Houston Open... A Chance for Children
05 Apr 2008

With the 2008 contribution from its 36 Charity Partners at the Shell Houston Open, total charitable donations through the Houston Golf Association (HGA) will exceed $50 million since 1974.

Shell Oil has been the engine responsible for the tremendous growth in charity contributions. Since assuming the title sponsorship, Shell Oil, HGA and charity partners have generated about $44 million for children-related charities since 1992.

That's 88% of the cumulative historic total. One of the reasons for the recent surge in charity giving is the emphasis that Shell Oil places on the charity.

The tournament has impacted about a million children over the years through activities of charity organizations which have received funds each year from the Shell Houston Open.

The Houston Golf Association provides funding to the following local agencies from the proceeds of the Shell Houston Open. Each provides workers at the golf tournament. The current core charities this year are:

  • Acres Home Youth Association
  • Boys and Girls Harbor, Inc.
  • Cenikor Foundation, Inc.
  • Chinquapin School
  • Interfaith Center of The Woodlands
  • Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Texas Gulf Coast & Louisiana, Inc.
  • Star of Hope
