Shell helped create the Center for the purpose of fostering sustainable development principles

Windmills generating energy

The Shell Center for Sustainability of Rice University was created by Shell Oil Company in July 2002 to raise awareness, foster understanding and encourage implementation of sustainable development principles in corporate economic, social and environmental decisions.  The Shell Center is engaged in a variety of activities for the purpose of sharing knowledge about best practices in sustainability, developing new technologies and processes, and educating the public and private sectors on sustainable development issues and policies.

The Shell Center is a part of Rice University's Environmental & Energy Systems Institute.  The Center draws upon various strengths of the university and collaborates with other highly respected regional, US and global institutions of higher learning and nongovernmental organizations.
