Credit Card Fraud Prevention

According to a national identity theft prevention center, credit card fraud is becoming increasingly prevalent and costs U.S. consumers thousands of hours a year to clear their names and accounts. Last year, one out of every 20 people was a victim of credit card fraud. Shell recognizes the issue and places a very high priority on keeping our customers’ cards secure.

Shell customers can use their credit cards at any Shell location throughout the U.S. with confidence. We have been very proactive in responding to this industry issue by providing training and education to our dealers on credit card fraud. We continually work to make card security stronger at Shell retail locations and constantly test new methods for using credit cards that will provide our customers and our dealers with even greater security. Additionally, we monitor Shell card use at our gasoline stations to help give our customers increased protection.

Some visible ways that we do this is to include Citi® Identity Theft Solutions on every Shell-branded credit card as well as zero liability on unauthorized charges. We also have implemented a zip code prompting program at certain Shell locations called “Zip In, Zip Out” that prompts Visa, MasterCard and American Express customers to enter their five-digit billing zip code when paying at the pump. Should customers not know, or forget, their billing zip code, they may complete their transaction inside the station, where the zip code will not be required. This will still permit legitimate cardholders such as business travelers, students or elderly people to make their purchase with the credit card of their choice.

Carolyn Yapp, U.S. Cards & Payments manager states, “Keeping our customers’ credit cards secure is a very high priority for us. Since the inception of Zip In, Zip Out in July 2004, we have seen a substantial reduction in credit card fraud at sites that have this program.” Because PIN/debit and check cards require a PIN number for security purposes, users of those cards will not be required to enter their billing zip code, unless they select the “credit transaction” option, which does not require a PIN code.

To assist our customers with the zip code process, we have placed visible decals on all pumps at sites that are part of the Zip In, Zip Out program.
