Each year, Shell collaborates with the Points of Light Foundation, a national volunteer network, to sponsor this day of service. The company reserves time for employees to participate in corporate-sponsored activities designed to improve its communities. Shell and Motiva volunteers will provide assistance at the Houston Food Bank, an organization that Shell has partnered with since Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service activities were initiated in 1996. Shell also is partnering with Keep Houston Beautiful and Civic Club 237 in South Park to help pick up trash, clear debris from vacant lots and mow lawns. In addition, the volunteers will help clean areas along Martin Luther King Boulevard. “This is a day when we can take time to pay tribute to Dr. King's principles and lasting legacy. Shell advocates volunteerism as a significant part of our corporate culture, and our employees are always ready to provide for their respective communities,” said Roxanne Decyk, senior vice president of corporate affairs and human resources. “We fully support the call to serve others as a fitting way to celebrate a leader who devoted his life to meeting community needs.” As many schools are closed in recognition of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, it is expected that many Shell employees will also bring their children to the volunteer sites located throughout the Greater Houston area.
