Society of Petroleum Engineers Receives Major Funding Commitments from Shell

08 Apr 2004

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) announce today a multi-year funding commitment of $400,000 by Shell Exploration & Production, to Tomorrow’s SPE: Investing in SPE.org, a special fundraising effort undertaken by the SPE Foundation.

The funds will be used to enhance SPE’s use of Internet technology to serve the petroleum industry. Shell’s commitment is among the largest to date and, when coupled with those of other oil and gas companies and SPE leaders, catapult the SPE and SPE Foundation fundraising effort toward its goal.

“Shell is proud to support the Society of Petroleum Engineers’ project to enhance their Web site.   For many years, petroleum professionals have relied upon SPE’s technical library, conferences and various publications to provide current industry information. Since most of the information is now accessible via the Web, it is critical that SPE’s Web site have advanced capabilities,” said Gaurdie Banister, regional technical director for Shell EP Americas.

“Since SPE.org was first introduced in 1995 it has been recognized as a critically important resource for the oil and gas industry,” said Don Stacy, SPE foundation trustee. “The funds contributed by Shell and others will be used to create a state-of-the-art ‘knowledge portal,’ that will significantly improve access to vital technical information and facilitate collaboration and continuing education efforts.”

“Corporate donations, such as the generous investment from Shell, set the pace for others to emulate.   It is entirely appropriate that Shell be among our most generous donors, given that nearly 2,000 Shell employees are active SPE members and four Shell engineers have served as presidents of SPE since 1974,” adds Dennis Gregg, another SPE foundation trustee.
