The newly installed solar electric system will generate sufficient power to operate critical loads in the Athens City-County Health Department, including refrigerators that store vaccines and key communications equipment, such as computers and telephone/fax machines. The system will therefore improve the Health Department’s ability to respond to public health threats and emergencies, as well as reduce their dependence on the local electrical grid. An added benefit is that the electricity the solar system produces during the day will be fed back into the local grid, which will lead to lower electric bills for the Health Department, as well as help address air quality and other environmental issues. The installation of the solar electric system was made possible by the Athens City-County Health Department receiving two government grants – one by the Ohio Department of Development’s Office of Energy Efficiency, which funds state programs promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy – and the other by the Ohio Department of Health, which received funds to upgrade public health infrastructure at local health departments from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
