Shell will sponsor the Shell Hydrogen Scholars Program at Howard University to provide financial aid to undergraduate students in the engineering program. In addition, the program will include funding for student research in hydrogen fuel cell projects. Funding for the two-year program will total $30,000. Phillip Baxley, Shell Hydrogen’s vice president for business development, said “Howard University has some of the most talented students in the country and we welcome the opportunity to engage great thinkers as we explore alternative transportation technology for the future.” Dr. James H. Johnson, dean of Howard’s College of Engineering, Architecture and Computer Sciences, said, “We are excited about joining Shell Hydrogen in training researchers and engineers in hydrogen fuel cell technology for vehicles of the future.“ Shell Hydrogen (US) has partnered with General Motors Corporation (“GM”) to illustrate the advantages of hydrogen fuel cell cars in a demonstration project in Washington, D.C. Shell is converting a service station at 3355 Benning Road in northeast Washington to a new hydrogen and gasoline fueling station. Once completed, the site will offer both gasoline fuel for today’s cars and environmentally friendly hydrogen fuel for GM’s ‘cars of the future’. Chartered in 1867, Howard University has approximately 9,000 undergraduates and 1,200 graduate and professional students in 12 colleges and schools. For the 2003-2004 academic year, Howard topped the nation’s schools in the number of National Achievement Scholars, enrolling 71 students. Photos available.
