Shell Named in Top 50 Companies Survey by DiversityInc Magazine

19 Apr 2004

Shell Oil Company has been named to DiversityInc Magazine's Top 50 Companies for Diversity list for 2004.

Shell also submitted applications to DiversityInc in 2002 and 2003 and made the Top 50 Companies for Diversity lists each time. Last year, Shell also ranked fifth in the survey’s Top 10 Companies for Supplier Diversity.

“We recognize that there is a business case for diversity and inclusiveness at Shell and we are committed to ensuring that diversity is valued throughout the organization. Expanding on that commitment, we are also dedicated to reaching out to our broad range of stakeholders. Being recognized once again by DiversityInc is indicative of our continued progress,” said John Jefferson, Shell Oil Company’s director of diversity.

One hundred seventy-eight companies participated in DiversityInc Magazine’s fourth annual ranking. To assess each company’s measurement programs for evaluating diversity success, DiversityInc asked, specifically, if each had data on four key areas: CEO Commitment, Human Capital, Corporate Communications (internal and external) and Supplier Diversity.

Participating companies also had their data considered for specialty lists: “The Top 10 Companies for Diversity Recruitment & Retention,” "The Top 10 Companies for Supplier Diversity,” "The Top 10 Companies for African Americans," "The Top 10 Companies for Latinos," "The Top 10 Companies for Asian Americans," "The Top Companies for Executive Women," "The Top Companies for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender (GLBT) Employees," and “The 20 Noteworthy Companies for Diversity."

“Managing diversity is a competitive factor for any business, from sales and marketing to recruiting and retaining the best talent,” said Luke Visconti, partner/co-founder, DiversityInc.

This year’s ranking is twice as detailed as last year's and is the most in-depth analysis of corporate diversity management, leadership and marketing that ever has been undertaken. For the first time anywhere, valid standards to evaluate any company in the United States against the best were developed in every category.

“This year, the questions were analyzed over a period of six months and virtually all of them were revised or augmented, for a total of 122 questions that are so specific and detailed that a true, metrical picture of corporate diversity emerged,” noted DiversityInc Executive Editor Barbara Frankel.
