"Bird Flu" Background and Information

printable version

Avian influenza (“Bird flu”) is a highly contagious disease of birds caused by the H5N1 Influenza A virus.

Exposure to infected poultry and their faeces or dust/soil contaminated with faeces can result in human infection. On the basis of presently available data, WHO concludes that any processed poultry products (whole refrigerated or frozen carcasses and products derived from them) and eggs do not pose a risk to public health.

Those at risk are employees of affected poultry farms and others, like veterinarians, cullers and transporters who visit poultry farms.

Outbreaks of avian influenza have occurred in Vietnam, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Pakistan, China, Laos, Russia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia. It has been reported in Turkey, Romania and Croatia.

The WHO has not recommended that the general public avoid travel to any of the countries affected by H5N1.
