Energy will increasingly come from alternative sources like wind and biofuels, while hydrogen is a potentially sustainable transport fuel. In the U.S. Shell is involved in various wind projects and is working in partnerships to make hydrogen fuel cell vehicles a commercially viable reality. In the northeastern U.S. and southern California, around 80 percent of all ethanol sold flows through Shell and Motiva facilities.

Wind

Wind energy is the fastest growing area of power generation worldwide. - Over the next decade, installed wind energy capacity is expected to grow annually by at least 10 percent. Shell WindEnergy is developing this naturally abundant source of energy  worldwide - in the U.S alone it’s capacity has grown from 50 megawatts (MW) in 2001 to 634 MW (Shell’s share is 317 MW). Shell is progressing various wind project developments in West Virginia, Texas, Wyoming, California, Idaho and Hawaii. Shell WindEnergy  and Luminant, a subsidiary of TXU Corp., recently announced a joint development agreement for an up to 3,000-megawatt wind project in the Texas Panhandle, which would be the world’s largest wind farm development to date.

Biofuels

Biofuels produced from biomass such as plants could help reduce both the world’s dependence on oil and CO2 production. Shell is one of the world’s largest distributors of biofuels and is working to develop second-generation biofuels that offer less CO2 production.

 

In the northeastern U.S. and southern California, the world’s biggest markets, around 80 percent of all ethanol sold flows through Shell and Motiva facilities. In 2005, we sold around 800 million gallons, mainly in the U.S. and Brazil - enough to avoid around three (3) million tons of CO2. Typical corn ethanol produced in the U.S. can reduce ‘Well to Wheels’ CO2 production by around 30 percent (or 3 percent for a 10 percent ethanol blend).

Hydrogen

Hydrogen is the simplest element and the world’s most plentiful gas and can be used as a non-polluting and potentially sustainable fuel. The goal of Shell Hydrogen is to provide safe, reliable and affordable hydrogen fuel to customers when and where they need it and to create value from developing technologies that enable fuel cells to come to market.

 

In the U.S., Shell is bringing hydrogen capabilities to select locations in the New York City and Los Angeles metro areas to demonstrate the viability of a hydrogen fuel infrastructure.

 

In Washington, D.C., Shell has safely and successfully operated the nation’s first hydrogen dispenser integrated at a Shell retail gas station to support fuel cell vehicles being introduced into the area. This station has been in operation since November 2004, providing for the sale and dispensing of hydrogen in a retail environment. This initiative represents an important step forward in the commercialization of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

 

In California, Shell is a key member of the California Fuel Cell Partnership, along with some 20 partners from the automotive and energy industries, fuel cell developers and government.
