What might the future of energy look like?
We know that the world will continue to rely on hydrocarbons to meet its ever increasing energy demand. But the need to develop alternative, cleaner sources is stimulating a new phase of technology development.
Technology Futures is a collection of comments by experts and thought-leaders from beyond Shell - from business, academia, media and various industries - on those technology developments that could significantly shape the provision of ‘alternative’ (non-fossil based) energy over the next 20-30 years.
The comments were gathered via interview and three-day workshops where they were brought together to debate, challenge and predict the technology drivers and the obstacles that may play a role in addressing the big energy-related issues facing society today.

The information in Technology Futures reflects the comments of thought-leaders from industry, media and academia. While they do not necessarily reflect the view of Shell, they highlight the potential of technologies that enable alternative (non-fossil based) energy sources, the obstacles that must be overcome to realise that potential, and the societal expectations of such sources.
