Shell Sulphur Solutions is dedicated to delivering world-class marketing and developing valuable applications for sulphur, a natural co-product of oil and gas processing.
Shell recognises Three Hard Truths facing the energy industry:
- Population growth and economic development are accelerating energy demand
- “Easy” supplies of oil and gas cannot meet that demand
- Greenhouse gas emissions are rising even faster than energy demand
Recognising that higher energy demand means more reliance on hydrocarbon resources which will, in turn, mean more sulphur.
Shell has developed a dedicated sulphur business to manage the complete value chain of sulphur - from upstream refining to marketing - providing sulphur for everyday industries such as mining and textiles through to the development of new products which can incorporate sulphur, for example sulphur in roads, fertilizers and concrete.

It is well-known that many of the world’s remaining reserves of oil and gas are richer in H2S and sulphur than previously-excavated fields. At the same time, improved standards mean refineries need to remove more sulphur from fuels to meet environmental needs.
Shell Sulphur Solutions has been created to address these challenges. Our goal is to create a virtuous circle of sulphur management; removing sulphur where it adds little value, and then using this recovered sulphur to add value, for example as a component of new end-products which have the potential for large scale commercialisation with significant benefits.
