Ship tour

printable version
A day in the life of...

Manning a ship is a 24 hour daily operation. The Deck Officers are on watches throughout the night keeping a lookout while the Engineer Officers are always on call ready to sort problems out when things go wrong. A normal working day is described below but no two days are the same. You have to expect the unexpected.

10:00 On the bridge

Heavy traffic in the Singapore Straits means the Bridge is fully manned. The Captain, 2nd Officer and deck cadets are keeping a sharp lookout for other ships and navigational dangers.

11:00 In the Engine Room

Planned Maintenance is an important part of an Engineer Officer's job. Here one of the Engineers is carrying out a crankshaft deflection examination using high precision instrumentation.

14:00 Crew working on deck

The crew are hard at work preparing the vessel for port and cargo operations.

16:00 Boat Drill

Alarm bells have rung. Everyone puts on their lifejacket and goes to the muster stations.

Thankfully it's only a drill!

17:00 Preparing food in the Galley

Galley staff are busy making the final preparations for dinner.

Meanwhile the senior staff and safety officer are still busy as they attend the daily work planning meeting to review progress.

18:00 Officer's Lounge

After dinner it's a relaxing time for everyone. You can watch a movie, chat in the lounge, write a letter, use the gym or just read a book listening to music.
