Deck

Captain

Overall responsibility and authority for all activities within the ship.

 

The Master is also Chairman of the Management Team and is responsible for:-

 

    • safety, both operational and occupational
    • safe navigation of the ship
    • safe carriage of cargo
    • co-ordination of progress on maintenance
    • compliance with legal, international, local and Company's regulations and requirements
    • victualling
    • accounts
    • all on board activities and administration

 

Chief Officer

The Chief Officer is the Master's deputy and is second in command on the Deck side.

 

He may be required to keep a navigational watch.

 

Responsible for:-

 

    • safety and safe working practises of all personnel
    • cargo custody and handling including preparation of tanks
    • ballast custody and handling
    • stability of the ship
    • maintenance of the deck under the supervision of the Chief Engineer
    • anti-pollution measures
    • medical locker and first aid duties
    • ship security
    • training of Deck Cadets

 

The Chief Officer is also responsible for the proper performance of duty including job allocation of all navigational officers, cadets and deck crew.

 

Second Officer

The Second Officer understudies the Chief Officer. He must keep a navigational watch and is responsible for navigational duties such as Planning the Passage.

 

Responsible for:-

 

    • the safety of all personnel working for him
    • maintenance of the Bridge Information Book
    • acting as Shipboard Safety Officer when required
    • maintenance and care of Breathing Apparatus and Oxygen Resuscitation equipment and records
    • acting as nominated officer for the communications system (GMDSS) with responsibility for tests and records

 

Third Officer

The Third Officer understudies and assists the Second Officer. He must keep a navigational watch and assist with ballast and cargo operations, as required.

 

Responsible for:-

 

    • the safety of all personnel working for him
    • the maintenance and upkeep of all deck portable fire fighting equipment and lifesaving appliances and for the keeping of associated records.
    • maintenance of navigational equipment as detailed in the Company Instructions.

 

He/she is also responsible to the Master for the complete records of on board training and where required shall act as nominated officer for the GMDSS station with responsibility for associated tests and records.

 

Engineering

Chief Engineer Officer

The Chief Engineer Officer is the ship's technical manager and head of the maintenance team.

 

He is accountable to the Master for:-

 

    • the safe working practices of all personnel together with the Chief Officer
    • the efficient operation of all machinery and equipment installed on board for the purposes of propulsion, cargo handling and the provision of hotel services
    • the routine checking, testing, maintenance and repair of machinery and fittings throughout the ship
    • maintenance of safety equipment
    • spare gear and central stores inventories and associated documentation
    • update and control of the Engine Information Book and associated records
    • ship's fuel (bunker) custody and related anti-pollution measures
    • the use of fresh, domestic and distilled water
    • the training of Engineer Cadets and monitoring their progress.

 

Second Engineer Officer

The Second Engineer Officer is the Chief Engineer's deputy. He understudies the Chief Engineer Officer in all aspects of his managerial, professional and commercial duties.

 

Responsible to the Chief Engineer Officer for:-

 

    • engine room safety and safe working practices
    • the safety of all personnel working under his supervision
    • the organisation and execution of all engine room watch keeping and machinery operating routines
    • the maintenance, operation and upkeep of all parts of the engine room and the proper performance of maintenance in accordance with the decisions of the maintenance team and the provisions of the integrated work plan
    • technical supervision of the engine room workforce
    • supervision, as delegated by the Chief Engineer Officer, of all crew that work in the engine room
    • spare gear and its inventory
    • fire fighting and safety equipment (including fixed fire fighting equipment, e.g. the "CO2" systems on board) and safe practices in the engine room.

 

Third Engineer Officer

Understudies and is responsible to the Second Engineer Officer for:-

 

    • the safety of all personnel working under his supervision
    • electrical systems and equipment
    • acting as Shipboard Safety Officer when required
    • stores and spare gear allocated to his charge by the Second Engineer Officer
    • electrical and mechanical maintenance and safety
    • technical supervision of the work-force as required.

 

Junior/Fourth Engineer Officer

Understudies the Second and Third Engineer Officers and is responsible to the Second Engineer Officer for:-

 

    • the safety of all personnel working under his supervision;
    • maintenance as directed
    • maintenance and upkeep of engine room safety equipment and associated records
