In 2006 Shell exited its conventional crystalline silicon production, sales and marketing activities. The only remaining activity in the area of solar energy is a stake in the AVANCIS thin-film manufacturing plant in Germany, which commenced production in late 2008. Compared to traditional silicon based technology, thin-film uses substantially less raw materials in the active layer. This is where the sun’s energy is converted into electrical energy. Thin-film technology also requires a less complex production process which can offer cost benefits when producing high volumes. Visit the AVANCIS website to learn more.
