An overview of Shell’s social investment programmes in Singapore

In Singapore, Shell* is a major corporate citizen and a firm advocate of sustainable development. As a major foreign investor in Singapore, Shell actively participates in the economic well being of Singapore. Beginning in 1961, Shell commissioned the first oil refinery for which the company was awarded “Pioneer Certificate No. 1” by the Singapore government. In 1991, the first Long Residue Catalytic Cracker was built. Also on its centenary 1991, Shell received Singapore’s first “Distinguished Partner in Progress” award in recognition of having outstanding economic contribution to the country and support of community and cultural projects during its 100 years in Singapore. All these demonstrate Shell’s pioneering spirit for economic progression in Singapore.

Shell's involvement in the Singapore community also ensures that its obligations to the other two aspects of sustainable development and that of social and environmental responsibility are also met.

At Shell in Singapore, the Social Investment programmes take into consideration the company’s resources and are devoted to developments for the betterment of the community. Our strategy is to focus support on projects that address issues directly linked to our business. Here in Singapore, the Social Investment framework consists of four main areas – education, environment, enterprise and employee participation.

Shell has a firm reputation for supporting educational activities that have become traditional events for schools; and other programmes that support the wider community. Such include programmes involving road safety education; the impartation of entrepreneurial skills among Singapore's young people; and science and technology development. Through such social investments, Shell is helping develop the nation's most precious resource - its people.
