 Preventing dirt and film from building up is one of the secrets to having a great looking car. To maintain your car's condition, wash your car weekly or fortnightly, depending on the road and weather conditions. Experts recommend you polish or wax your car two or three times per year.
|

- Remember new cars or new paint jobs should not be polished for around two months after painting, to allow the finish to harden.
- Cutting compounds should be used only rarely. Cutting does precisely what it says - cuts a film of paint off the body. Too much cutting can take you down to the primer.

Scratches and Scrapes Small scratches that don't penetrate the primer can be made virtually invisible with a soft cloth and a little cutting compound. For scratches that bare the metal, clean the area of old polish using a silicone solvent then apply a primer to the metal or use ordinary nail varnish. Dents and Creases If the damage is minor, press or knock (with a soft mallet) the panel back to its approximate shape. Use an electric sanding disc to sand the damaged zone. Then paint with an anti-rust zinc primer. Now fill the zone with any one of the two-part commercial fillers available (resin plus hardener). On hardening, sand it back to the required shape using wet and dry paper to attain a smooth finish. Then prime and paint. Rust Is Your Car's Enemy From the day you buy your car, the rust battle starts. And if you wait for the first telltale paint blisters to appear, the battle is lost. Remember, prevention is a hundred percent cheaper than any remedy, so always try to stay one step ahead of the rust.

- Inspect all ledges and corners under your car
- Look for any rust spots or blisters
- Keep the mudguards, doorsills and floor area free of mud by washing thoroughly
- Ensure the drain plugs at the bottom of all doors are clear, especially station wagon tailgates
- Where necessary, wire-brush rusted areas, paint with rust killer or converter, and then apply primer and under-body sealer

- Check pedal rubbers for wear and replace where necessary
- Inspect safety belt anchor points and belts for fraying - repair and renew as required
- Lubricate door locks using powdered graphite, or a dry lube pencil
