Support for international initiatives

We lend our support to international declarations and conventions that have been developed to foster human rights. We also work with various human rights organisations to guide our response to human rights.

UN Global Compact

We support the UN Global Compact, which is based on the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work and the Rio Declaration on Sustainable Development.

UN Special Representative

Shell provided input to Professor John Ruggie, who was appointed UN Special Representative on business and human rights in 2005. His report was released in April 2008. It aims to the clarify responsibilities of business regarding human rights; develop materials for undertaking human rights impact assessments and, compile best practices.

Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights

We also support the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights, which provide practical guidance to companies on how to maintain the safety and security of their operations, within a framework that ensures respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

International Organisations

We have worked with organisations such as Amnesty International, The Danish Institute for Human Rights, International Alert, and Pax Christi to help us develop and implement our approach to supporting human rights.
