Social performance
Shell-run companies in Nigeria work with local people to address their concerns and to help them benefit from operations. In addition to the significant contributions they make to government, these companies fund and support state and private community development initiatives to benefit those living near its operations.
As well as the payments Shell-run companies make to the federal government in Nigeria, they also contribute through social investment programmes. In 2008 Shell-run companies in Nigeria provided more than $158 million ($56.8 million Shell-share) to the Niger Delta Development Commission as required by law.
Social investment programmes
Operations run by the Shell Petroleum Company (SPDC) also contributed an additional $84 million ($25.2 million Shell share) directly to community development projects that deliver, for example, training, education and healthcare. Many projects involved partners including national companies, local government and international organisations.
SPDC introduced a new model of co-operation, Global Memoranda of Understanding, in 2006 to ensure economic empowerment of people in the Niger Delta and improve infrastructure.
Niger Delta AIDS response programme
One of many health and education projects SPDC runs in the Niger Delta is the Niger Delta AIDS Response programme. This introduced more care for those with HIV/AIDS or tuberculosis , testing for HIV/AIDS, training for government health care, and advice and care for pregnant women. In 2009 it won the first Partnership in Collective Action Award from the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
