Goal 4: Reduce child mortality
Nearly one million children under five die each year from indoor air pollution. Providing modern energy to replace traditional biomass fuels helps reduce this risk. In addition, it helps power pumps to provide safe drinking water, and provides essential energy to hospitals.
What are we doing?
1. Core business activities
Producing and delivering modern energy for development, see Millennium Development Goal 1.
Improving children’s health indirectly via other goals – economic opportunities, HIV/AIDS prevention, and reduced pollution: See Millennium Development Goals 1, 6 and 7.
2. Social investment
Tackling indoor air pollution, see Millennium Development Goal 3.
Providing support for health projects, for example:
- In Nigeria, The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd sponsors a health support programme to train voluntary Village Health Workers and Traditional Birth attendants. Shell also supports National Immunisation Day and the Government's drive to "kick polio out of Nigeria". Visit Shell Nigeria's Health Care page.
- In the Philippines, Shell’s malaria programme with the local government has significantly reduced childhood deaths. A Social Health Insurance scheme implemented with local partners helps those not able to access healthcare. Visit the Malampaya website - opens in new window.
