Sustainability indices

We continue to be included in some of the leading indices that assess companies’ economic, environmental and social performance on behalf of investors.

Socially responsible investment includes social, environmental and/or ethical factors in deciding  which stocks or bonds to price, keep or sell. Over the last decade this has become increasingly important, leading to the creation of sustainability indices to measure and track economic, social and environmental performance of businesses.

Carbon Disclosure Project

The Carbon Disclosure Project is an independent not-for-profit organisation. It was launched in 2000 to collect corporate information on climate change and we provide our data to the project every year.

The project released its latest report in September 2009, including the updated Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index rankings – the 50 companies with the highest scores for climate change disclosure.

We were included in the index in 2008 but not in 2009. Our score increased from 68 to 75 points in 2009 but the requirement for inclusion rose to 79 points.

Dow Jones Sustainability Index

We have been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index since its inception in 1999. It remains one of the leading indices to assess companies’ sustainable development performance. The 2009 index ranked Shell highly on biodiversity, corporate governance, environmental policy and management systems, social impacts on communities, social reporting, stakeholder engagement, and transparency. Lower ranking was given for production and reserves related data and our investment in renewables.

FTSE4Good

We were included in the FTSE4Good Index in 2009, as we every year been since its inception in 2001. Companies must meet the index’s environmental, stakeholder relationship, supply chain labour, bribery, and human rights criteria to be included. There is no ranking within the index.

Goldman Sachs

Goldman Sachs updated and expanded their research in 2008 to cover 33 more energy companies (59 in total). We maintain second place in the Goldman Sachs Global Energy Environmental, Social and Governance Index, which focuses on sustainable investing in the energy sector. The index rates companies according to 28 indicators across the categories of corporate governance, leadership, labour, communities and investment and environment.
