Working in collaborative partnerships

No single group in society has all the answers, or the capability and credibility to address the energy challenge all by itself. We work with a wide range of people in voluntary organisations and associations – sometimes called "public-private partnerships"- to address environmental and social problems

Read about some of the "public-private partnerships" that we are active in.

Clean Air Initiative for Asian Cities

Shell is actively involved in the Clean Air Initiative for Asian Cities, set up by the World Bank and Asia Development bank to help improve local air quality in Asia’s fast-growing megacities. We joined in 2002 and are providing co-ordination to the stakeholder groups (governments, industry, community groups) that together are working on air quality specifications.

Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership (GGFRP)

Initiated by the World Bank, this public-private partnership was set up to support efforts by national governments and the oil industry to reduce flaring and venting of gas. As a founding partner, we actively promote the Global Gas Flaring and Venting Reduction Standard, donated funds to run the project, the seconded a senior Shell staff member to the project two years.

IPIECA partnerships task force

The International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association (IPIECA) is the only global association representing the oil and gas industry on key global environmental and social issues. Amongst its many other roles in IPIECA, Shell has led a task force within IPIECA to encourage the building of partnerships by the extractive industries. Out of this has come a best practice guide on collaborative work in the industry.

International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

United Nations Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles

Through IPIECA (see above) Shell is actively supporting the United Nations Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles. This partnership helps support developing countries in their efforts to reduce vehicular air pollution. For example, the partnership’s efforts, which Shell played an active role in, resulted in the complete phase-out of lead in sub-Saharan Africa in 2006.
