Security standards
We must protect our people and facilities in ways that also respect the human rights of the communities in which we operate. We have company-wide security standards that define how we do this. They set strict guidelines on the use of force and armed security, and include the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights.
Shell-wide security standards have been in place since 2001. They define how we protect our people, assets and reputation against security threats, worldwide.
The topics they cover include:
- rules on how security operations are carried out;
- rules on when and how to use armed security;
- standardised security risk assessments;
- security training for relevant staff; and
- investigating and reporting all security incidents.
Our standards also incorporate the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights. The Voluntary Principles were developed by non-governmental organisations (NGOs), governments and companies, as a guide for companies on risk assessment and interactions with public and private security.
