The Ras Laffan Community Outreach Workgroup was shaped to create a respectful, trust-based partnership between Ras Laffan Industries and the North Community and introduce sustainable programs in the community to support the Qatar 2030 vision. The RLC Community Outreach Workgroup comprises of all the Stakeholders in RLC and which includes Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatargas, RasGas, Exxon Mobil, Qatar Shell, Dolphin Energy, Oryx GTL, Ras Laffan Power Company (RLPC) and Q-Power. This specific programme focuses on road safety and targets the important issues with the youth during their educational years.
Road safety experts will visit six schools in the first stage of the programme – Al Khor Girls Independent Intermediate and Secondary School, Ali Bin Abdulla Al Misnad School for Boys, Al Khor Boys Elementary School, Al Thakira Boys Primary School, Al Khor Girls Elementary School and Al Khor Academy.
The sessions have been tailored to the specific safety needs of each school. However, each school visit includes general talks about the importance of seatbelts, understanding road signs, accident first response, quad bike safety and other road topics. To illustrate to the children the importance of wearing a seat belt the safety experts will use a device called a seatbelt convincer. This machine simulates the surprisingly-strong effects of a crash at just a walking pace. Moreover, Hamad Medical Corporation is running basic first aid sessions as part of the project. The children have also been asked to put on short plays on specific topics of road safety in order to deepen the thinking on road safety and encourage more dialogue with parents and teachers. The Director of RLC, Sheikh Khalid Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, who oversees the RLIC Community Outreach Workgroup on behalf of RLC and its End-Users said: “This particular project is aimed at the children who are the leaders of tomorrow. This type of programme is specifically targeted at the youth as they are the future vehicle owners and drivers. By providing children with the insight and the importance of Road Safety at a young age could change the Road Safety behaviour on the roads of Qatar for the coming generation.” Andy Brown, Managing Director of Pearl GTL and Qatar Shell Country Chairman and member of the RLC Community Outreach Workgroup said: “We hope that these sessions will raise awareness of road safety amongst school children in Al Khor and Al Thakira. Children are future drivers, and we think it is never too early to start talking about road safety. Perhaps children will also pass on these critical messages to their families when they get back home.”
