The Pearl GTL project is being jointly developed by Qatar Petroleum (QP) and Shell. Over 48,000 people are currently working on the Pearl GTL construction site. Mr Brinded’s visit marks the Shell’s latest global Safety Day, when all Shell staff around the world down tools to renew their commitment to safety and achieving the goal of zero safety incidents in the workplace. The Executive Director addressed thousands of workers at several stops on his site tour on the importance of embedding safety as a core value in everything they do. Mr Brinded was joined on site, by Andy Brown, Executive Vice President Qatar and Abdullah Salatt, Chairman of the Pearl GTL Management Committee and Senior Adviser to the Minister of Energy and Industry. Mr Brinded said today: “Although I have been following the Pearl GTL project closely, I am impressed by the sheer scale of progress on the ground since my last visit. I have chosen to come here on Safety Day because Pearl GTL is such an important project for Shell. Delivering this project successfully starts with working safely. We need the commitment of everybody to stay safe.” Mr Salatt said: “QP have followed the progress of Pearl GTL very closely over the last three years, the project is making steady progress and we applaud Shell’s focus on the safety and welfare of all the workers.” Later in the day, Mr. Brinded also visited the Pearl Academy in Al-Khor and inspected the Safety Day activities staged by the Shell Staff. He also addressed them on the need for upping the game on Safety in anticipation of commissioning the Pearl Plant. Mr Brinded is Executive Director of Upstream International, a new business created from Shell’s Exploration & Production and Gas & Power businesses. In the same reorganization Qatar Shell was elevated to regional division status alongside regions like Europe, Africa and Asia-Pacific, underlying the importance of Qatar to Shell’s future success.
