Pearl GTL Sustainable Development Committee Meets To Discuss Latest Sustainability Issues

13/07/2009

The Pearl Gas to Liquids project’s independent Sustainable Development Committee met yesterday to discuss current sustainability opportunities and challenges, including how the project is responding to Qatar National Vision 2030, the latest safeguards to ensure workers’ welfare, and how the project is participating in the Ras Laffan Industrial City Community Outreach Programme.

The Pearl GTL Sustainable Development Committee includes senior representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Industry, the Ministry of Environment, the General Secretariat for Development Planning, the Social Development Center, and Qatar University.

Its purpose is to identify and give advice on sustainability issues that should be addressed by Pearl GTL management.

For Shell sustainable development means helping meet the world’s growing energy needs in economically, environmentally and socially responsible ways.

Pearl GTL is being developed by Qatar Petroleum and Shell.

The Commitee is co-chaired by Abdulla Hussain Salatt, Senior Adviser to His Excellency Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, Deputy Premier and Minister of Energy and Industry, and Andy Brown, Shell’s Executive Vice President Qatar.

Mr Salatt said today: “We greatly value the opinions of the Sustainable Development Committee. Pearl GTL is the largest energy project in Qatar and it is important that QP and its partner Shell do everything to make sure it is executed in a responsible way.”

Mr Brown said: “The Committee helps ensure that the perspectives of broader Qatari society are properly taken into account when we consider how to address the key sustainability issues and opportunities facing the project. We appreciate its members giving up their time to help us.”

Pearl GTL’s Sustainable Development Committee was established in 2005 and meets twice each year.
