Shell has commissioned its applied research laboratory at the Qatar Science & Technology Park. The applied research laboratory is in the Qatar Shell Research & Technology Centre, the Shell research and learning facility at the science park. Academics from universities in Doha, as well as industrial scientists working in Qatar, attended the commissioning ceremony. |
Shell has been conducting research work at the Qatar Science & Technology Park since 2005, initially in temporary facilities. The permanent Qatar Shell Research & Technology Centre at the science park was opened by Deputy Premier and Minister of Energy and Industry, His Excellency Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, in April 2008. The commissioning of the new laboratory will allow an expansion of the research work at the Qatar Shell Research & Technology Centre, which until now has had to rely on other Shell laboratories around the world for laboratory work.
Shell is committed to a substantial expenditure of up to US$100 million over a 10-year period on a world-class technology innovation and development programme in Qatar.
Shell has brought together a team of 36 to work at the Qatar Shell Research & Technology Centre, a quarter of whom are Qataris. The team includes some 20 engineers and scientists.
Andy Brown, Managing Director of Pearl GTL and Qatar Country Chair, said today: “Shell is committed to developing technology for and with Qatar. The opening of the applied research laboratory at the Qatar Shell Research & Technology Centre will allow us to expand the research work already underway. We hope this work will contribute to Qatar becoming a knowledge leader in the oil and gas industry, as well as benefiting the projects Shell is developing here and elsewhere.”
Equipment in the laboratory includes a custom-made unit to test catalysts to be installed at the Pearl Gas to Liquids plant under construction in Ras Laffan Industrial City. |
