Qatar Shell Women’s Network hosts panel discussion on Professional Development

30/10/2008

The Qatar Shell Women’s Network held a Panel Discussion at the Diplomatic Club on professional development. The panel included local, regional and international speakers discussing their personal experiences of developing their careers around the world.

The Qatar Shell Women’s Network is a self-organized but company-supported employee group within Qatar Shell. It aims to promote the role of women in the company and in business more broadly through networking and knowledge sharing. Similar groups exist in Shell in many other countries worldwide.

Embedding diversity and inclusiveness - how people from different backgrounds, different geographies and different cultures work together in an inclusive style that results in better teamwork – is a key goal within Shell. Globally Shell’s targets include increasing the proportion of senior management roles occupied by women to 20 per cent in the long term.

The panelists were: Dr. Darwish Al-Emadi, Director of Social and Economic Survey Research Institute at Qatar University; Dr. Saad M. Khalil, Economics Expert at the General Secretariat for Development Planning Qatar; Carol Cameron, Executive Vice President of Human Resources and External Affairs for Shell Gas & Power; and Kathleen Eisenbrenner, Executive Vice President of Global LNG for Shell Gas & Power.

Major themes at the discussion included varying cultural approaches to professional development, career strategies, and the development policies that businesses can adopt.

Andy Brown, Country Chairman of Shell in Qatar said: “Shell employees in Qatar are passionate about their professional development, and so am I. It pleases me greatly that employees are organizing events like this which help them to further their knowledge and careers. Shell views the empowerment of women as a central enabler in the development of society and supports the development of women in business.”

Reem Al-Wohaibi, President of the Qatar Shell Women’s Network, said: “This was a great opportunity to network with senior Shell women and local experts. I hope that the evening has helped, in a small way, to further develop the growing role of women in Shell. As a Qatari woman myself, I hope this evening will further enhance our contribution to the economic growth of the country under the leadership of Her Highness Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser Al Misnad who is an outstanding role model for Qatari women.”
