Top technical experts from companies including Qatar Petroleum, Qatargas, Petroleum Development Oman, Gazprom, and the National Iranian Oil Company and distinguished academics from countries including Qatar and Oman are sharing their knowledge at the two-day National Oil Company/Shell workshop on Sour Gas Production and Processing, in Carbonates being held at the Qatar Science and Technology Park in Education City.
Sour gas is natural gas contaminated with hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide. Much of the gas found in the Middle East is sour. Developing sour gas fields poses particular reservoir, drilling and completion, and engineering challenges.
Shell has over 50 years experience of sour gas activities with operational experience of some 25 significantly contaminated gas fields worldwide where safety takes priority. Sulphur is a by-product of sour gas production, and Shell is one of the world’s leading sulphur traders as well as sulphur product developers.
Andy Brown, Qatar Shell Country Chairman, said today: “As the world’s need for energy increases, the ingenuity of the energy industry needs to increase as well. We need to look for new sources of energy, including fields that were perhaps too difficult to develop before. Shell has long experience in sour gas, but many of the National Oil Companies here for this conference have as much or even more experience. We hope that by bringing together some of our best minds we can help find further solutions in partnership.”
The conference delegates will also tour the Pearl Gas to Liquids project in Ras Laffan Industrial City and the Qatar Shell Research and Technology Centre at the Qatar Science and Technology Park during their stay in Qatar.
