Shell launches Shanghai trial of clean fuel from natural gas

25/08/2004

(Shanghai, August 25) Shell International Gas Ltd (Shell) and Shanghai Pudong Bus Transportation Co., Ltd. have jointly launched a road trial of Shell’s clean Gas to Liquids (GTL) Fuel in Shanghai.

Buses from Pudong Bus Transportation Co., Ltd. will be fuelled by a blend of GTL Fuel and standard diesel over a two-month period on a route through the Pudong New District, Shanghai. The trial was launched at the Central Hall of the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum by Heng Hock Cheng, Chair of Shell Companies in China, and Wang Junmin, Deputy General Manager of Shanghai Pudong Bus Transportation Co., Ltd.

The trial will involve 12 buses with standard Euro 1 engines. Eight of these buses will use a mixture of 30% GTL Fuel, a clean high quality synthetic fuel pioneered by Shell, and standard diesel. The remaining will use standard diesel as a comparison. During the trial the reduction in emissions and improvement in fuel efficiency and noise levels of the GTL fueled buses will be measured and compared.

Shanghai is the latest in a number of major cities around the world to launch a road trial of Shell’s GTL Fuel.  Trials have already been completed, or are underway in Los Angeles, Berlin, London and Tokyo.

Jack Jacometti, VP Global GTL Development, Shell Gas & Power, explained: “Shell GTL Fuel is a clean, colourless synthetic fuel, derived from natural gas. It can be used in existing diesel engines without modification – either as a blend with standard diesel fuel or in neat form. It is the most cost effective of alternative fuels, and its unique properties – excellent combustion characteristics and virtually free of sulphur – deliver significant emission benefits. GTL Fuel has a key role to play in the long term transition to renewable fuels, and in the development of advanced engines.”

Heng Hock Cheng, Chair of Shell Companies in China, said: “Shell is committed to the development and application of clean energy and is a world leader in the GTL industry and the development of other new energy forms.  We are proud to test our new technology and product in Shanghai which is committed to developing a modern and efficient transportation system as part of its plans to develop the city in a sustainable way.”

Pudong Bus Transportation Co., Ltd. is committed to the development of Shanghai’s city public transportation.  While maintaining good service quality for the Shanghai residents, it constantly adopts new technologies and products to reduce air and noise pollution and takes as its duty the protection of the environment of Shanghai.
