 Obtaining and maintaining a licence to operate and grow requires broad acceptance and support of our business from the communities and societies in which we work. In order to earn this trust, we need to understand the concerns that a community may have and work with them to mitigate the negative impacts and create lasting economic opportunities. All Shell Companies in Pakistan aim to be good neighbours in the communities where we operate. This means more than running our operations cleanly and safely: it also means working with local people to address their concerns and help them benefit from our activities. This is not a question of either/or nor is it a trade-off between being economically responsible (profitable) and socially responsible.
Instead, at Shell Pakistan, social responsibility is at the heart of the way we do our business. Our Social Investment (SI) projects not only include education and health, but also encompass community development. People who live near large industrial operations often have concerns about their impact on the local environment.
Shell Pakistan has many such operations and through our commitment to sustainable development, we are working to manage and mitigate these impacts. Our Good Neighbours project is a good example of this. The Good Neighbours project is a campaign to beautify the area around Shell House with the assistance of the Local Government.
This project has involved: - Extensive renewal of the road infrastructure
- Lighting,
- Landscaping
- Installing Road Safety signage
- Plantation and Beautification
- Making the area ‘people-friendly’ through setting up of benches, bus stops and a beautiful fountain sculpture
In short, the neighbourhood has been re-hauled to express Shell Pakistan’s commitment to the local community. This project has made the neighbourhood area greener, cleaner, and evoked great appreciation form our esteemed neighbours and stakeholders in the area.
