 Medina came out as a strong contender in the two-day finals tournament despite being a runner up in the Shell Active Chess Northern Luzon leg. An athlete scholar since Grade 4 in Cavite School of Life and now in FEU – FERN College, Medina said that his discipline and strong mental faculties were instrumental in making him win this year’s championship, where he took home a Php20,000 cash prize and trophy. Another promising chess player from FEU – FERN College, McDominique Lagula (front row, left), finished 1st runner up with a score of 6 points and with 1.5 direct encounter points. Davao’s pride Austin Jacob Literatus of Doña Carmen Denia National Highschool (front row, right) settled for 2nd runner up, also garnering 6 points but with 1 direct encounter point. They both took home a trophy and cash prizes of Php15,000 and Php10,000, respectively.
Placed at 3rd and 4th runners up (not in photo) were Laguna College of Business and Arts’ Christian Nañola and Tagum National Trade School – Davao’s John Kenneth Tabada who scored 6 points and with .5 direct encounter point and score of 5.5 points respectively. A cash prize of Php 7,500 for Nañola and Php 5,000 for Tabada were handed over during the awarding ceremonies.
In his closing remarks, Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation Vice President for Communications Roberto Kanapi congratulated all of the 44 Shell Active Chess finalists and recognized the efforts of their parents and coaches for their overwhelming support for the program. He also encouraged the young chess athletes to carry the torch of excellence as they continue to live the important values they learn from the game of chess.
Sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, the annual Shell Active Chess tournament supports the empowerment of the youth as part of the company’s overall sustainable development commitment. The event is backed by Shell Fuels, Shellane, Shell Helix, and McDonald’s, in partnership with SM Supermalls.
