The 16th Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship – Northern Luzon Leg held recently at the Brickstone Mall in Tuguegarao City finished off with Jan Nigel Galan (front row, 2nd from left) of De La Salle Greenhills and Loren Brigham Laceste (front row, 2nd from right) of Colegio de San Juan de Letran emerging as leg champions in the Kiddies and Juniors division, respectively.

 La Salle athlete scholar Galan triumphed in the Kiddies division with 6.5 points and 37.5 Bucholz points over Mark Lester Asejo (front row, 3rd from left) of Cagayan National High School with 6.5 points and 35 Bucholz points and Alder Baldwin Jallorina (front row, extreme left) of St. Jerome’s Academy in Nueva Vizcaya with 6.5 points and 31 Bucholz points. The three young chess enthusiasts bagged seats in the Shell Active Chess grand finals slated on November 8-9, 2008. Juniors division first time finalist Laceste, also a 2007 Shell Active Chess Grand Finals second runner up, prevailed as the only Juniors division contender with 6.5 points. Joining him in the finals are Far Eastern University’s Jan Ranel Morazo (front row, extreme right) with 6 points and 36 Bucholz points and University of Baguio’s Leonardo Abalos, Jr. (front row, 3rd from right) with 6 points and 33 Bucholz points.
Each winner from the respective divisions received a cash prize, while the six finalists, also took home trophies aside from cash prizes.
