Iloilo City’s strong contender Noel Vincent Crucero (front row, 3rd from right) of the Special Education Integrated School for Exceptional Children - Iloilo City and Bacolod’s pride Joel Pimentel (front row, 3rd from left) of St. Benilde School – Bacolod both emerged victorious in the seven-round Swiss system tournament of the 16th Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship – Western Visayas Leg (Iloilo City) held recently at the SM City Iloilo. The two young chess enthusiasts ended their game with a perfect score of 7 points in the Kiddies and Juniors divisions, respectively.

 Kiddies first and second runners up Adelaide Joie Lim of University of St. La Salle – Bacolod (front row, extreme right) and Jerich Cajeras of West Negros University – Bacolod (front row, extreme left) each reaped 6.5 points but defeated each other on tiebreak points. Lim also received the overall top female award at the end of the tournament. Also finishing with 6.5 points each were Juniors division first and second runners up Venancio Loyola of University of San Jose Recoletos – Cebu (front row, 2nd from right) and Argie Nobleza of Filamer Christian College – Capiz (2nd from left).
The winners bagged seats in the Shell Active Chess grand finals slated on November 8-9, 2008 and took home cash prize and trophies.
