Brother Armin Luistro, FSC, DLSU-Manila President and Chancellor, received the cheque donation from SciP Country Chairman Edgar Chua during the handover ceremony on February 4, 2007 at the Multi-Purpose Room of Yuchengco Hall in DLSU-Manila.

DLSU-Manila Chancellor Emeritus and University Consultant Dr. Carmelita Quebengco, Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations Jose Kalaw, and DLSU Science Foundation President Rene Fuentes witnessed the handover of the donation, together with College of Engineering Dean Pag-Asa Gaspillo, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Campus Development Aurellano de la Cruz, Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation Sustainable Development Manager Mylene Santos, and staff of DLSU-Manila and Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation.

In his speech, Chua highlighted that education is a very important foundation for a nation. “Good education means that a country has good foundation, one that will sustain it and move it forward. Education is not only the responsibility of the university or of the parents themselves, but it is also the responsibility of the greater society, specially the private sector.”

“This donation is our small way of helping the university achieve its objective of making its facilities at par with global counterparts. We in Shell see this donation as a donation to the country, because De La Salle is an institution that is taking part in nation building,” Chua added.

The DLSU-Manila donation is part of the Shell Science and Technology Education Program (STEP), a program for the improvement of higher education, particularly engineering in the Philippines. Upon completion of the renovation, the room will be named the Shell companies in the Philippines Audio-Visual Room.

In 2005, Shell also gave financial support for the DLSU-Manila  scholarship endowment in chemical engineering.
