Shell National Youth Active Chess Honors NCR Leg’s Youngest Player

10/07/2008

Three-year old Jeane Axcel Dione Carredo of Sibol Learning Center in Quezon City was hailed as the youngest player during the seven-round Swiss System tournament of the 16th Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship – National Capital Region Leg held recently at SM City Manila.

Youngest Player

Young Dione was an instant celebrity with his innocent but fearless presence while moving pieces on the chessboard. Seated on piled plastic chairs, the small wonder managed to beat two of his opponents. His grandfather, Avelino Carredo, was responsible for the little boy’s interest in the sport. Dione learned the names of the chess pieces when he was only 2 ½ years old and was taught some basic moves when he turned 3 on January of this year.

Sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, this annual chess tournament that has captured the hearts of young chess players and produced many of the country’s finest grandmasters is co-sponsored by Shell Fuels, Shellane, Shell Helix, Shell Rimula, Shell Advance and McDonald’s, in cooperation with SM Supermalls, LCC Mall – Naga, Brickstone Mall – Tuguegarao City and Western Mindanao State University (Zamboanga City).
