SPEECH is a program that combines traditional and computer-assisted language learning, which aims to provide intensive training to elementary and high school educators to enable them to keep pace with the current demands of teaching English as the standard medium of instruction. The goal of the program is to reinforce their knowledge of the English language with the available technologies and through constant practice, ultimately producing more effective communicators. SPEECH is the new addition to the successful Pandacan Expanded Assistance for Community Empowerment (PEACE) program, and brings a new, if not unique, facet to the lives of PSFI's adopted community. For a period of two months, teachers will undergo an hour and a half of daily Dynamic Education (DynEd) sessions using award-winning computer software solution and some classroom activities. PSFI, the City of Manila, the Division of Manila City Schools, and Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. partnered to establish the Shell SPEECH Center, a refurbished classroom suited for the training program. The room provides an atmosphere conducive for learning; fully air-conditioned and equipped with 10 desktop computers and a server to meet training needs. With more than 3,500 students and a hundred teachers currently enrolled and employed in Zamora Elementary School (ZES), SPEECH is estimated to touch thousands of young minds in Pandacan Manila. "We consider you as an essential partner in stepping up our pride to improve the competence of the Manila teachers, in the use of the English language," says Dra. Luisa Quiñones, Superintendent of the Division of Manila City Schools. In order to prepare students for life after school, she points out that "Better teachers mean better students."
