Bigger, Better Shell National Youth Active Chess Slated

12/05/2005

True to its commitment to develop chess and help raise the level of play in the country, Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation has expanded this year's Shell National Youth Active Chess Championships (SNYACC) to eight legs covering eight regions starting with the National Capital Region (NCR) qualifiers on June 25-26 at SM City Manila. With the additional of three legs from last year's five-stage circuit, the nationwide talent-search is expected to lure a record field from both the country's chess-playing students and out-of-school youths with two divisions -- the juniors, exclusively for players 20-years-old and below (born not later than 1985), and the kiddies, for players 14-years-old and below (born not later than 1991) - on tap in the four-month long tournament launched by Pilipinas Shell in 1992.

"As Shell companies in the Philippines are committed to serve the cause of nation-building, the continuing involvement in this sport is part of our commitment to contribute to the overall development and growth of the Filipino youth," said Roberto Kanapi, Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. general manager for external affairs.

Registration is now ongoing. Forms are available at Shellane showrooms nationwide and will be distributed by the SNYACC leg coordinators to various schools, chess clubs and municipal / provincial government offices. They can also be downloaded at www.shell.com.ph. Entry fee is pegged at P50. Each leg, except for Davao which will accept 800 applicants, will accept only 500 applicants on a first-come, first-served basis, according to the organizers of the event backed by Cebu Pacific Air, Accel, Shell Better Mileage Gasolines, and Shellane in cooperation with SM Supermalls, Gaisano Mall (Davao City) and Limketkai Mall(Cagayan de Oro City). Ivan Gil Biag of Cavite and Rodel Alsado of Panabo City, Davao del Norte captured the juniors and kiddies crowns, respectively last year.

A P20,000 grand prize is up for grabs in the juniors division while the kiddie champion will receive P10,000. Leg winners in the junior and kiddies categories will also get P5,000 and P4,000, respectively.

Representation in the grand finals per category will be composed of the top three placers each from the NCR, two Northern Luzon, Southern Luzon, two Visayas, and two Mindanao legs. Baguio will host the second leg on July 9-10 at SM City-Baguio while Tuguegarao will stage the other Northern Luzon eliminations on July 23-24 at the People's Gymnasium.

Batangas takes the place of Lucena for the Southern Luzon eliminations on Aug. 6-7 for the fourth leg of the series. Cebu will host the first of two Visayas legs on Aug. 20-21 at SM City-Cebu while Iloilo takes its turn on Sept. 3-4 for the sixth leg before Davao and Cagayan de Oro stage the last two legs (Mindanao eliminations) on Sept. 17-18 and Oct. 1-2, respectively.

The grand finals is set Oct. 15-16 at SM City North EDSA. Under the format, leg competitions for both the juniors and kiddies divisions will be a seven-round Swiss system while a nine-round Swiss system will be played in the grand finals with the top three finishers receiving cash prizes plus trophies. Special awards will be given to the School Most Represented in the Kiddies and Juniors Division, Overall Top Female Player, and Youngest Player for every tournament leg and the Youngest Finalist in the grand finals.
