This innovative product, complete with MW/SW/FM radio frequencies will benefit provincial residents because it is "cost-efficient" as there is no need to use batteries or electricity to make the unit work. It is easy to use - one minute of winding or turning the power generator's arm will charge the radio to run for 30 minutes and fully charging it for an hour will yield 15 hours of continuous listening. The program complements the social development program of Pilipinas Shell through Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Incorporated’s (PSFI) countryside development program by making the units available to the residents and communities particularly in rural areas not connected to the power grid and where access to information is limited. Farmers and workers can bring this portable radio anywhere without worrying about spending money for batteries or electricity. They can listen to the news, music and even training and educational programs by tuning in the radio as long as they want. "This is not a commercial undertaking but more of a public service by Pilipinas Shell and Philips. Through this partnership, we will be able to bring knowledge and education to communities in the countryside," said Shell companies in the Philippines Country Chairman Edgar Chua. "We are very proud to be in partnership with a company whose name is synonymous to corporate social responsibility," said Philips Group of Companies President & CEO Menardo Mateo. Twelve thousand self-powered radio units were turned over to PSFI, which PSFI will make available to communities in Palawan, Oriental Mindoro, Camarines Sur, and the ARMM Region.
