Shell Active Chess Goes to Baguio on July 9-10, 2005

Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation’s continuing search for chess talents in the countryside resumes July 9-10 when the second leg of the Shell National Youth Active Chess Championships is staged at SM City Baguio for the Northern Luzon leg.The two-day event is expected to draw 500 students and out-of-school youths in the 14-years-and-under (kiddies) and 20-and-under (juniors) brackets with the top three finishers in each group gaining berths in the national finals slated on October 15-16 in SM City North EDSA, Quezon City.

 

Registration is now ongoing. Entry fee is pegged at P50. Only the first 500 applicants on a first-come, first-served basis will be accepted for this leg. Under the format, leg competitions for both the juniors and kiddies divisions will be a seven-round Swiss system while in the grand finals, play will be a nine-round Swiss system with the top three finishers receiving cash prizes plus trophies.

 

A P20,000 grand prize is at stake in the juniors class while the kiddie champion will receive P10,000. Leg winners in the juniors and kiddies categories of the event backed by Shell Better Mileage Gasolines, Cebu Pacific, McDonald's  Philippines, Accel, and Shellane in cooperation with SM Supermalls, Gaisano Mall (Davao City) and Lim Ketkai Mall (Cagayan de Oro City), will also get P5,000 and P4,000, respectively.

 

De La Salle-College of St. Benilde's Dino Ballecer and Gen. Licerio Geronimo Memorial National High School-Rizal’s Narquingden Reyes led the finalists from the National Capital Region after topping juniors and kiddies divisions, respectively, of the kick-off leg of the eight-stage nationwide series at SM City Manila last week. Joining them in the national finals are Omar Bagalacsa and Melvin Palomata (juniors) and Loren Brigham Laceste and Mari Joseph Turqueza (kiddies).
