The Shell National Youth Active Chess Championships (SNYACC) kicks off its eight-leg nationwide circuit on June 25-26 with the staging of the National Capital Region (NCR) leg with close to 500 chess-playing students and out-of-school youths expected to see action at the 5th level, Activity Center of SM Manila. Registration is still ongoing and will end June 18. Only the first 500 registered participants will be accommodated on a first come-first served basis. Entry fee is pegged at P50.

For details, contact NCR leg coordinator Alex Dinoy at 0916-5146384 or (02) 744-1664. Forms are available at Shellane showrooms nationwide and are actually being distributed by the SNYACC leg coordinators to various schools, chess clubs and municipal/provincial government offices. They can also be downloaded at www.shell.com.ph.

Two divisions -- the juniors, exclusively for players 20-years-old and below (born not later than 1985), and the kiddies, for players 14-years-old and below (born not later than 1991) - will be on tap in the four-month long tournament sponsored by Pilipinas Shell and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP). Other backers of the event are McDonald's Philippines, Accel, Cebu Pacific, Shell Better Mileage Gasolines, Shellane in cooperation with SM Supermalls, Gaisano Mall (Davao City) and Lim Ketkai Mall (Cagayan de Oro City). Each leg, except for Davao, will accept only 500 applicants on a first-come, first-served basis, according to the organizers of the event launched by Pilipinas Shell in 1992 to help develop the sport and give the young crops a venue where they could hone their talent and skills. The Davao leg will accommodate up to 800 entries.

Baguio will host the second leg on July 9-10 at SM-Baguio while Tuguegarao will stage the other Northern Luzon elims on July 23-24 at the People's Gymnasium. The Southern Luzon elims will be held in Batangas on Aug. 6-7 for the fourth leg while action shifts to Cebu on Aug. 20-21 at SM-Cebu for the first of two Visayas legs. Iloilo takes its turn on Sept. 3-4 for the sixth leg.

Davao and Cagayan de Oro will stage the last two legs (Mindanao elims) on Sept. 17-18 and Oct. 1-2, respectively. The top three finishers in each leg will advance to the grand finals slated Oct. 15-16 at SM City North EDSA.

Under the format, leg competitions for both the juniors and kiddies divisions will be a seven-round Swiss system while play in the grand finals will be a nine-round Swiss system event with the top three finishers receiving cash prizes plus medals.
