Shell Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (also known as Automotive Diesel Fuel or Automotive Gas Oil) is a special purpose light distillate fuel for use in high-speed diesel engines (i.e. those operating at greater than 800 rpm), in services involving frequent and relatively wide variations in loads and speeds. It is used in automotive (both on and off road) and industrial applications.

Fuel characteristics are controlled to ensure operability across New Zealand's variable temperature range and special allowances are made for known cold locations, to prevent waxing on cold mornings. The diesel has a high cetane number, which allows starting at temperatures well below those prevailing in NZ.

Shell Diesel in New Zealand is produced to conform to the New Zealand Engine Fuel Specification Regulations - 2008.  http://www.med.govt.nz/templates/StandardSummary____350.aspx

Diesel was changed to 10ppm sulphur (previously 50ppm) from October 2008 to ensure the fuel available at Retail pumps, would comply with the legislated specifications (10ppm by 1 January 2009).  The low sulphur content will mean that diesel engines will emit less harmful emissions than when using higher sulphur diesel, and will allow modern diesel engine technology to be imported into New Zealand.
