FAQs: Becoming a Shell Retailer (Station Operator)

Shell Malaysia, as the industry market leader in the country, continuously aspires to grow and expand. We consistently embark on new initiatives to improve and enhance our product and service offerings at our retail outlets throughout the country to be ahead of others in meeting customer demand. To complement our comprehensive retail strategies, we welcome capable and committed Malaysians to operate our retail outlets. We are pleased that many inquiries have come from interested members of the public on becoming Shell retailers, hence, we attach below answers to some of the frequently asked questions (FAQs).

 

Q. What are the requirements if I want to become a Shell retailer?

A. The following are the minimum requirements:

 

    • You must operate the retail outlet on your own and on a full-time basis, i.e. you must give up current employment and/or other businesses.
    • Between 27 to 45 years.
    • Your academic qualification must be at least SPM/MCE. Degree holders are encouraged.
    • You must be service-oriented and like to deal with people. Past experience in a service industry will be an advantage.
    • You must have a minimum of RM320,000 and RM550,000 for security deposit and working capital. The required amount may differ according to locations and expected outlet sales profile.

 

Q. How do I apply? How do I know when Shell is looking for new operators?

A. From time to time, Shell will put up advertisements in the national newspapers with a general invitation to members of the public to apply for petrol station operatorship with Shell. However, you may register your interest by filling up and submitting in an application form at any time. We shall contact you if you meet the initial criteria for us to progress the process with you.

 

Q. Where do I get and submit the application form?

A.  The application form can be obtained by accessing our homepage, www.shell.com.my (look for Start Up a Shell Station under Shell for Motorists).  Alternatively, the application form can be obtained from any of our regional sales office throughout the country and submitted to the sales office where you intend to operate our outlet.  Please refer to our homepage for the contact addresses. .

 

Q. Can I choose the location of the retail outlets?

A. You may state your preference of location in the application form, but Shell reserves the absolute right to offer you a location where it sees fit based on your capability.

 

Q. If I own a piece of land, can I operate a petrol station on it?

A. Shell shall study the site potential as a petrol station, and if it meets the criteria, Shell may either purchase or lease the site from you and construct the outlet. The land deal is treated separately from the operatorship of the outlet, i.e. Shell may purchase or lease the land from you, but it reserves the right to appoint anyone it deems fit to operate the outlet. However, you may also apply for a Shell operatorship and the normal process and requirements of our retailer recruitment are applicable.

 

Q. If I own a piece of land, can I build and operate my own station?

A. This programme is called the Dealer Owned Dealer Operated station. It is open to entrepreneurs although the licensing is subject to approval by the Ministry of Domestic & Trade Consumers Affairs.

 

Q. What process do I need to go through to become a Shell Retailer?

A. Your application goes through a standard retailer selection process. This includes interviews, a familiarization at selected retail outlets where both you and Shell can evaluate your suitability for the business. If you are successful for the final stage, you will undergo a panel interview where you have to prepare and present a case study or a working paper on a retail outlet.

 

Q. If I am successful, how soon can I start the business?

A. Once you pass the final panel interview, you will be placed into the new retailer 'pool' of the sales region you applied. When a retail outlet - new or existing - becomes available, it will be offered to the successful candidates in the pool based on individual's assessed capability. Therefore, the actual commencement of the business depends largely on the availability of retail outlet and also your acquisition of the relevant permits and licenses.

 

Q. How will Shell help me to start the business?

A. It is a great concern, hence our strong commitment, to ensure that all Shell Retailers are successful in the business. Before you even start the business, you must undergo a 5-week new retailer course where you are taken through the theoretical and practical aspects of the retail business. This business exposure ensures that you start on strong fundamentals. Throughout your business partnership with Shell, you will always have access a to our retail personnel for advice and guidance, and to our comprehensive training program.
