Shell Traffic Games 2009 Kicks-off in Terengganu

28/03/2009

This year’s Shell Traffic Games kicked off at the Taman Lalulintas in Taman Bandar Chukai in Kemaman, Terengganu with some 600 students from 35 primary and secondary schools participating in the state-level road safety competition.

Shell first started its Shell Traffic Games programme more than 50 years ago with the aim to educate young Malaysians on the importance of road safety, and inculcate good behaviour as future motorists and pedestrians.

Encik Syahrilazli Mahammad, Regional Retail Manager East, Shell Malaysia said: "As a responsible corporate citizen, the company believes that sustaining a long-term investment in road safety education for young Malaysians is worth every Ringgit because every road safety lesson learnt at the Shell Traffic Games is a lesson learnt for the protection of human life.”

Shell hopes that the lessons from the Shell Traffic Games will instil a sense of responsibility in the hearts and minds of the students as future road users to help make our Malaysian roads safer.

Two schools from Kemaman emerged as the overall winners of the Terengganu Shell Traffic Games: Sekolah Kebangsaan Payoh for the primary school category and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Badrul Alam Shah for the secondary school category.  The prize giving ceremony was officiated by Yang Berhormat Haji Nawawi Bin Mohamad, Deputy Chairman of State Welfare Committee, Community and Women Development.

Entering its 52nd year, the games are held annually starting at the state-level. The culmination of the games will see the gathering of state-level winners competing at the national-level in October this year. The next location for the state-level road safety competition is Perlis.

Every year from March to November, some 40,000 Malaysian schoolchildren and over 2,000 teachers, traffic police officers, competition sponsors and organising officials participate in this extensive road safety competition.  The games are organised by the State Road Safety Council and Shell Malaysia, together with resources from, and close cooperation of state governments, state education departments, local councils, the Police as well as the transport and information departments and other related government agencies.

Over 50 years now, more than a million Malaysian road-users have ‘graduated’ from the Shell Traffic Games.

About the Shell Traffic Games

Inaugurated in 1957, the same year Malaysia won its independence, the Shell Traffic Games share a long and memorable history of sustainable achievement for Malaysians.  As one of Shell's longest running corporate social responsibility programmes, this year marks the 52nd year for the Shell Traffic Games.

The annual Shell Traffic Games are staged at permanent traffic gardens or litar lalulintas specially designed to simulate a complete, miniature road system or traffic situation. It kicks-off from state-to-state and involves the participation of students from various district primary and secondary schools.  The finale of the Shell Traffic Games is then at the national-level where top scorers compete for the national championship and honours.

Over the years, improvements have been made to the programme to keep up with the latest advancements in education systems and information technology. The programme comprises theory and practical road lessons combining computer-based modules, written and on-road tests. To simulate actual scenarios, participants are awarded merit points for complying with road safety regulations, or conversely given demerit points and issued traffic violation summons by real traffic police officers when they break road safety regulations or commit driving offences.  Prizes are then awarded to winning schools for the most outstanding record on road safety performance.

The top schools for both the primary and secondary school categories are then invited to represent their state at the national-level Shell Traffic Games.

The competition, as an institution, is proud to have "graduated" over a million young Malaysian road-users around the country, who have participated in the Shell Traffic Games
