Shell Malaysia Awards RM4.3 Million in Scholarships to Outstanding Students

30/06/2009

Kuala Lumpur, June 30, 2009

Shell Malaysia today awarded 30 full scholarships to the value of RM4.3 million to enable outstanding Malaysian talents in Peninsular Malaysia to realise their full potential and pursue pre-university or first-degree studies at approved institutions locally or abroad. In addition, the Shell Student Excellence Awards totalling RM68,000 were presented to 90 students who had achieved excellent academic results.

The scholarships and excellence awards were presented by Dato’ Hajah Noor Rezan bt Bapoo Hashim, Deputy Director General, schools division, Ministry of Education.

At the 2009 Shell Scholarships Awards ceremony, Mr. Leslie Hayward, Shell’s General Manager, Human Resources said that the Company has been awarding scholarships and excellence awards for over 40 years.

“It is one of our long-standing commitments in support of the government’s effort to develop human capital, an action that is key at a time when the country is implementing a new economic model,” said Mr. Hayward.

He said that Shell recognises that Malaysia needs a highly skilled labour force derived from well-educated Malaysians to reach the ranks of a high-income nation.

Shell believes that education is the key enabler in any effort to transform the economy. “We join many who believe that the success of our future begins with the investments we put in our classrooms today,” Mr. Hayward added.

Annually, Shell Malaysia invests RM12 million country-wide in various educational assistance or capacity building programmes designed for the underlying objective of progressing capacity building, knowledge enhancement, skill development and promoting health and safety and environmental concern.

At the ceremony today, 20 full scholarships amounting to RM1 million were awarded to students in Peninsular Malaysia to pursue further studies at local universities while 10 full scholarships to the value of RM3.3 million were given out for further studies at universities abroad. Earlier this year, scholarships and awards to the value of RM7.8 million were presented to 470 recipients in Sabah and Sarawak.

For the Shell Student Excellence Awards, 90 students from various schools in Peninsular Malaysia who excelled in the recent Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR), Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) or Sijil Tinggi Pejalaran Malaysia (STPM) examinations received RM750 each. The selection of recipients for these awards were jointly undertaken by Shell Malaysia and the Ministry of Education.

Shell has partnered many universities through its Campus Ambassador Programme, providing input in the development of their curricula to enhance the universities’ already high-quality academic agenda. Shell also works with government agencies and non-governmental organisations on road safety education like the Shell Traffic Games that are held annually nationwide.

To promote environmental awareness, Shell also runs a number of youth programmes to promote environmental awareness.  One such youth programme is the Shell Eco-Marathon Asia to be held in Kuala Lumpur in 2010. This regional event aims to inspire students to think about energy efficiency and challenges them to design, build and test vehicles that travel the furthest using the least fuel. Student teams who are keen to register can log on to the Shell website for more information.
